In 1991, a three-year-old bald eagle was transferred to Liberty Wildlife from a facility in Minnesota. She had been found on the ground by a park ranger while still a first-year bird. She was taken to the Minnesota Raptor Center where she was treated and where it was discovered that, although she could fly a bit, she would be non-releasable due to the extent of her injuries.
After treatment, she was transferred to a nature center as an educational display bird. When the center closed down, the eagle was looking for a new home. Simultaneously, Liberty Wildlife was looking for an eagle to represent the species as an educational ambassador. It was a match made in heaven.
Lady Liberty has appeared at hundreds of schools, posed for photographers and videographers, and appeared on television. She has represented her species in ceremonies pertaining to the delisting of the bald eagle from the Endangered Species Act, has been featured on posters and promotional materials, and thrilled many a heart at Eagle Scout events.
